Headers contain tracking information for an individual email, detailing the path a message took as it crossed mail servers. Select your webmail provider or email client below for instructions on finding headers for a message.
Webmail providers
- Log in to Gmail.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.
- Select Show original.
- Log in to your AOL account.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click Details under the To field.
- Log in to your Excite account.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click Mail Preferences in the top right corner, under your email address.
- On the the Mail Preferences page, click Account Preferences in the Personal section.
- Check the box next to Display headers, and then click Save.
- Log in to your Hotmail account.
- Click Options next to the tabs.
- Select Mail from the left-side menu.
- Click Mail Display Settings.
- Under Message Headers, select Advanced.
- Click OK.
- Log in to your Microsoft Internet Mail account.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the File menu, and select Properties.
- Select the Details tab to display the full headers.
- Log in to your Netscape Webmail account.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the yellow triangle in the gray header section (on the right side, under Next >).
- Log in to your Yahoo! Mail account.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click Full Headers at the top of your message.
For Gmail:
The full headers will appear in a new window.
For AOL:
The full headers will appear above the message text.
For Excite:
The full headers for all of your messages will now be available. Return to your inbox, and open the message you'd like to view headers for.
For Hotmail:
The full headers for all of your messages will now be available. Return to your inbox, and open the message you'd like to view headers for.
For Microsoft Internet Mail:
The full headers will appear above the message text.
For Netscape Webmail:
The full headers will appear above the message text.
For Yahoo! Mail:
The full headers will appear above the message text.
Email clients
- Open IncrediMail.
- From your inbox, locate the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Right-click the message, and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab in the dialogue box.
- Open Mozilla.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the View menu, and select Message Source.
- Open Netscape 3.
- Click the Options menu, and select Show Headers.
- Select All.
- Open Netscape 4.
- Click the View menu, and select Headers.
- Select All.
- Open Opera.
- Click the message you'd like to view headers for so it displays in the window below your inbox.
- Click Display all headers, across from the To field.
- Open Outlook.
- Open a message.
- On the Message tab, in the Options group, click the Dialog Box Launcher icon image.
- In the Message Options dialog box, the headers appear in the Internet headers box.
- Open Outlook.
- Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Click the View menu, and select Options....
- Open Outlook Express.
- From your inbox, locate the message you'd like to view headers for.
- Right-click the message, and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab in the dialogue box.
For IncrediMail:
The full headers will appear in the dialogue box.
For Mozilla:
The full headers will appear in a new window.
For Netscape 3:
For Netscape 4:
The full headers will appear in the window below your inbox.
For Opera:
The full headers will appear in the window below.
For Outlook 2007:
For older versions of Outlook:
The full headers will appear in a new window.
For Outlook Express:
The full headers will appear in the dialogue box.
