The Quick Answer

  • Follow the instructions below to set up IMAP access in Windows Mobile 5.
  • Google Apps users, please follow the default instructions unless otherwise noted, replacing 'your_domain.com' with your actual domain name.

To configure IMAP for your Windows Mobile 5 device, just follow these steps:

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
  2. Open the Start menu and select Messaging > New Account....
  3. Select Other (POP3/IMAP) for your e-mail provider and select Next.
  4. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent messages.
  5. Enter your Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'
  6. Uncheck 'Attempt to obtain e-mail settings from the Internet', and select Next.
  7. Enter your email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') in the User name field.
  8. Enter your email password in the Password field.
  9. Leave the Domain field blank, and select Next.
  10. Select IMAP4 for the Server Type.
  11. Enter a descriptive name for account in the Account name field.
  12. In the Network field select how you want the device to connect to the Internet to access Gmail IMAP, and select Next.
  13. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Server field, and check Require SSL connection.
  14. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing Server field, and check Outgoing server requires authentication.
  15. Select Outgoing Server Settings.
  16. Make sure 'Use different user name for outgoing server' is NOT checked.
  17. Make sure 'Require SSL Connection' IS checked.
  18. Select Done.
  19. Select Next.
  20. You can change how much mail is downloaded to the phone. Adjust these preferences if desired, then select Next.
  21. Select how often you want the device to automatically check for new messages, and select Next.
  22. Select Finish.
  23. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.
